The success of any project begins and ends with a clearly defined purpose. It is the guiding light throughout our discovery and execution process and, ultimately, how we measure the overall outcomes of our work.
A
t Spark, every project tells a unique story shaped by our clients’ diverse needs and goals. With over 2,000 projects delivered, we understand that while each project is distinct, they all share a fundamental element: a clear and compelling purpose. This purpose drives our design solutions, ensuring every solution is tailored to meet our clients’ specific needs and achieve meaningful outcomes. We believe in a collaborative approach to understanding and defining this purpose, which is central to our process and critical to success.
Defining purpose
We must uncover three core components to define a project’s purpose: need, audience, and impact. We explore each through a series of questions and discovery tasks. Once we identify the need and target audience, we can start envisioning what a successful outcome may look like.
A clear purpose is the foundational step in our IDEAS process at Spark. Identifying our objective during the Initiation and Discovery steps influences the subsequent phases: Execute, Assess, and Support. Throughout the project, a clear purpose creates alignment and understanding of our intended goals throughout the work.
Guiding with purpose
Crafting a purpose statement can be as important as a project plan; both lay the groundwork for alignment and engagement. We define both early on and work to adhere to them throughout the project to ensure completion and overall success. Deviating from either our purpose or plan could risk the entire project.
At the start of the project, we always have a clear plan outlined. Complexities can naturally occur as the project starts–requirements shift or direction changes. When this happens at Spark, project purpose becomes our reference point to put things back on track. We are trained to identify this and quickly course-correct as needed. Even if projects run smoothly, the purpose is still a great point of reference to hold us accountable and ensure we meet our goals.
The impact of purpose
A powerful purpose can be a game-changer for both clients and project teams. For clients, it ensures that design solutions are more cohesive and aligned with their needs and aspirations. When a clear purpose guides a project, every design decision becomes more intentional, leading to outcomes that truly resonate with the client’s vision.
For the team, a shared purpose acts as a strong motivator. It helps everyone stay focused and driven, making them more engaged and committed to achieving high-quality results. The sense of accountability and motivation that comes from working towards a common goal can lead to innovative solutions and a stronger collaborative spirit. This unified approach helps in meeting and exceeding expectations, which can be incredibly rewarding for both the team and the client.
At the end of the project, success can be measured by meeting milestones and key metrics, but true success lies in how well the project aligns with its intended purpose. A clear purpose guides the project, ensuring it makes a lasting impact and resonates with client objectives. By focusing on purpose, we meet client needs and create meaningful outcomes that advance their product experiences and aspirations.
